Services for Justus Junior J.J. Brown, 81, Norman, will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday
at McFarlin Memorial United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Kathy King-Nobles
officiating, assisted by the Rev. Phil Fenn.
Private family gravesite services will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Rose Hill Memorial Park in Tulsa. Mayes Funeral Directors, where friends may call until 9 p.m. Monday, is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Brown died Friday Oct. 1. He was born April 18, 1912, at Welch, the son of Justus Albert and Kathryn Parks Brown. He moved to Tulsa with his family as a child and graduated from Tulsa's Central High School in 1928. While in high school, Mr. Brown played trumpet in the Tulsa Symphony Orchestra.
Mr. Brown attended the University Of Oklahoma and graduated from Oklahoma City University with a degree in music. While in college and after graduation, he also played in dance bands around the state.
Following his service in the U.S. Army, Mr, Brown earned a master's degree in music from the Vandercook School of Music in Chicago.
He served as a high school band director in the United States for several years and taught at American high schools in France and Germany for three years. Shortly after that, Mr. Brown moved to Norman, where he taught English and driver's education
at Norman High School from 1963 through his retirement in 1975.
Mr. Brown was a member of McFarlin Memorial United Methodist Church, the Siloam Masonic Lodge in Oklahoma City, the Delta Chi fraternity and the Kappa Kappa Psi honary music fraternity.
He is survived by a daughter, Kathy Brown of Norman; a sister, Eva Mae Mills of Norman; a neice, Mary Jo Atteberry of Noble; and a nephew, Ramon Mills of Shawnee.
The family has suggested memorial contributions to the Second Chance Pet Foundation of Norman, 321-1915, or McFarlin Memorial United Methodist Church, P.O. box 6390, Norman, Ok 73070 as appropriate for the expression of sympathy.
